HARIBON TRIBE | AUTHORIZED ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR
LAKAN GURO ERIK PEREZ
Training Circle:
Haribon Tribe
Location:
Upper Marlboro, MD
Focus Areas:
• Technical Analysis
• Philosophical Insight
• Interdisciplinary Practice
• Discipline and Dedication to Practice
• Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Training Journey:
• Erik began his martial arts journey in Guam with Wing Chun, laying the foundation for close‑range combat and discipline. Shortly after, he trained in Inosanto Lacoste Kali, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, and Jeet Kune Do/Jun Fan Gung Fu alongside Wing Chun for five years. This period built a strong base in weapons flow, adaptability, and open‑mindedness, shaping both technical skill and perspective.
• After relocating to Virginia, Erik continued to deepen his practice in Pekiti Tirsia Kali while also training in Hapkido. Hapkido introduced grappling and joint locks, broadening his study. Continued practice in Pekiti Tirsia Kali gave him insight into the link between culture, terminology, and martial science reinforcing the understanding that martial arts embody far more than technique alone.
Teaching Philosophy:
• Erik sees martial arts and instruction not as an end goal, but as an endless journey that evolves with each practitioner. He approaches martial arts and philosophies from a Yin‑Yang perspective, recognizing opposite forces as complementary rather than conflicting. Balance is emphasized when addressing tradition and innovation, as well as theory and application.
Community Contribution:
• Within the Haribon Tribe community, Erik has served as an assistant instructor and active member, helping foster an environment of respect and humility. He has been generous with his time, patient in his guidance, and dedicated to supporting students in their growth. He brings open‑mindedness and creativity to his teaching, encouraging students to explore and adapt while staying grounded in tradition. His wisdom and presence give depth to his role, embodying the values of the art and carrying forward its spirit as a trusted figure in the community’s continued journey.
